Fish. Don’t you just love them? Well, we do and there’s nothing that we love more than healthy fish in a healthy pond. Whether it’s prize koi or golden tench, goldfish or sticklebacks, all fish deserve an environment that keeps them sane and sound.
When buying fish some people go for buying online. In our view, it is best to get fish from a quality aquatic centre that can advise you. No one will just sell you fish without asking you the right questions about your pond. Fish are living creatures and need the right environment, not just to survive but to THRIVE!
Going to an aquatic centre means that the fish will also be captive bred specifically for ponds, rather than any wild-captured fish. Fish from aquatic centres are also tested for various ailments and usually put in quarantine on arrival.
When you go to buy fish, it is worth paying a little extra to make sure that they are healthy. There’s nothing worse than buying cheap and that fish having a disease and dying or worse still, infecting all your other fish.
It is also worth taking a water sample with you when you are buying fish for the first time. The aquatic centre can check that your water is correct for the fish you intend to purchase.
And remember, it’s not all about koi and goldfish. There are plenty of natural species that can swim around your pond, including tench, roach and rudd.
Remember, that you will need a budget to feed you fish, maintain the water quality and if you intend to go away for long periods, you will either need an automatic feeder or a friendly neighbour.
And VERY IMPORTANTLY…fish do get eaten. If you are near a waterway, there may be otters or mink in your area. Herons will find fish quickly, which is why it’s important to think about how you will protect them. So ask about nets, fish refuges, and general security for your fish.
